Howling Ridge – Guided Ascent

Howling Ridge on Carrauntoohil is the classic mountaineering day in Ireland. A complete adventure from start to finish.

Starting at Cronins Yard,  a fast 2 hour walk will have us reach the base of Howling Ridge, where we will use a mixture of scrambling and roped climbing to ascend the 500 metre ridge line of Howling ridge.

Aeriel view of Howling Ridge

If you like the sound of summiting Irelands highest mountain via an exposed rocky ridge line, then this is the adventure for you.

Am I fit enough for Howling Ridge?

A good overall level of cardiovascular fitness is required for this challenge. While no one move on the climb is physically tough, this is a long and tiring day and anyone wishing to climb Howling Ridge should have a good level of fitness, be used to long days on the hills and have a good head for heights.

Previous rock-climbing, scrambling or mountaineering experience is desirable.

Do I need prior climbing experience?

Prior climbing or mountaineering experience is desirable but not always needed.  Ive brought active hill-walkers with no specific climbing experience on Howling Ridge. They picked up the skills needed quickly and moved efficiently when needed. Likewise Ive brought experienced climbers on Howling Ridge who were affected by the exposure and didnt move efficiently at all.
